As many know, North Wales is home to Snowdonia National Park, which is one of the most stunning mountain regions in the UK. There is something truly wondrous about walking up a mountain and gazing over the greenery and lakes below, it’s a very life-affirming experience. This is only heightened when there is a dusting of snow atop these great mountains. The national park does offer an amazing sense of wilderness, especially towards the end of the year, and the great thing is that it is ripe for the exploration.
If you are visiting the north wales area then you’ll be pleased to know that there is no shortage of activities to get involved with. In this article, we have put together some great locations for a wintry walk in Snowdonia. Be sure to make sure you go on a route that is appropriate for your level of skill/experience, and that you are adequately prepared. Read on to get involved.
Moel Siabod
This mighty mountain sits above the villages of Betws y coed and Capel Curig, from the peak you will have some astounding views of the Snowdon range, as you can see 13 out of 14 of Snowdon’s highest peaks from one vista. At a titanic 872m, this mountain is the highest of the Moelwynion range of mountains and is a fantastic mountain to begin your winter adventure.
The majority of people will start the trek over from Pont Cyfyng or Capel Curig, the easiest route begins at the Plas Y Brenin Mountaineering Centre, which is based in Capel Curig. You can even look into caravans for sale North Wales.
Moel Eilio
This is an easier mountain to tackle, it is located just southwest of Snowdon, and in the winter months sees a great deal of snow in the wintertime. There are some breathtaking views over towards the Isle of Anglesey as well as the Llyn Peninsula, which is extremely appealing on a clear day after some snowfall. The simplest route to the two peaks starts in the scenic mountain town of Llanberis, if you follow the path of Bwlch y Groes, you will complete the circular route in about 4 hours. There is even an opportunity to move on to Snowdon if you want more of an adventure.
Pen y Ole Wen
The eastern ridge of Pen yr Ole Wen on the trip around cwm floor is among the most popular places for a winter wander, and a fantastic introduction to the Carneddau mountains of Snowdonia. Pen yr ole wen is the same height as England’s peak of Scafell Pike (which is the highest in England), it’s a great option. You would then follow the ridge over to Carnedd Dafydd. This depends on the route you take. Some steeper sections and scrambles will require crampons depending on the time of year and the route taken.
Snowdon’s South Ridge
The south ridge of Snowdon is also a great option, of course, Snowdonia’s namesake is the tallest in all of Wales (or any in England for that matter). And therefore arguably the most important in the area. Climbing Snowdon in the wintertime is a full-on expedition, where you come up against both snow and ice, the inexperienced tourists will vastly underestimate it. As such, it is recommended that you only climb Snowdon in warmer times of the year if you are not an experienced climber. The South Ridge is a great challenge for those people who are seasoned walkers and you will be in for a treat for the senses and a challenge for the body.
