World Heritage Day at North Wales Castles
A magical tour bus, along with 19th century warfare and traditional Welsh music are just some of the many activities on offer at these historic North Wales Castles. Cadw is celebrating World Heritage Day, by hosting a series of events at Conwy, Caernarfon, Beaumaris and Harlech. The heritage site is officially titled ‘Castles and Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd Heritage site’, these mammoth medieval buildings make for a fantastic grouping, with the gargantuan castles and their encircling walls at Conwy and Caernarfon collectively form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
These four castles offer a range of unique experiences and activities as part of World Heritage Day celebrations taking place the world over.
The event provides an opportunity to learn more about the internationally recognised site and to appreciate the special significance of the fortresses and communities that surround them.
Deputy minister for culture, sport and tourism, Lord Elis-Thomas announced that
“These exciting and unique events across these iconic castles are just part of a range of celebrations taking place during Wales’ Year of Discovery to promote some of our most important cultural assets.
“We want to inspire locals and visitors alike to learn more about the history of the World Heritage Site and the stories associated with it.”
Cadw is planning to release new resources later on this month to help people learn all about the castle’s history and their joint world heritage site status.
This includes a World Heritage Castles of Wales introductory leaflet, along with a very funny video that shows locals and tourists alike having their UNESCO World Heritage site knowledge tested out. The events includes the following
World Heritage Day celebrations taking place at Harlech castle, on Thursday April 18
Visitors can hop on the magical tour bus for a great journey through the fascinating history of Harlech castle.
At Beaumaris castle from 10-5pm on Thursday April 18 there will be a celebration of world Heritage Day with music and fun for visitors of all ages.
There will be traditional Welsh Music played throughout the whole day in the recently refurbished chapel.
There will be workshops for kids teaching them all about how to be a jester.
At the castle of Caernarfon from 11am to 4pm on Saturday April 20th all the way to April 21 visitors can experience the sights and sounds of the 19th century warfare as the 23rd Royal Welch Fusiliers’ regiment of foot parades into the medieval fortress to set up camp.
At Conwy Castle from 11am to 3pm there is a fantastic guided castle tour which will take you on a mystical medieval trip back in time.
