Chic Guitarist Nile Rodgers used to live in Colwyn Bay
Nile Rodgers spent a year in Colwyn Bay in 1974. He said that it was a great time in his life, although he had a hard time getting around as he couldn’t pronounce any road names or signs. He also did a bit of dating; he had a Scottish girlfriend called Colleen who he could barely understand!
“I fell in love with a darling girl called Colleen. I could barely understand her because she was actually Scottish. All I needed to know was the part where she said I love you!”
Colwyn Bay in the 70s would have been a very different place to how it is now.
Nile Rodgers has had a blessed career for sure, being involved in the production of nearly every disco hit of the 70s and 80s, working with Chic, Sister Sledge, David Bowie, Daft Punk, Duran Duran, Madonna, Mick Jagger and Bryan Ferry.
Nile Rodgers famously plays a 1960s Fender Stratocaster with a 1959 neck which is nicknamed the Hitmaker, acquired as a trade-in at a shop in Miami Beach, Florida. It has unique sound! It was on this where he learned his signature funk inversion style.
Today, Nile lives in Westport, Connecticut and New York City with his wife, Nancy Hunt, but he still dreams of Colwyn Bay as it was back in the day.
“It will happen and it’ll be like coming home. Colwyn Bay is part of my life’s story. Then after we could maybe pop up to #Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch for a cuppa?”.

Today’s Colwyn Bay is probably very different than how it was in Nile’s day! It’s become a hotspot for luxury accommodation, with a great offering of apartments for sale North Wales with a great many new build homes being constructed to live side by side and integrated with the classic vernacular architecture that all know Colwyn Bay for! A classic seaside town which is fully embracing the modern way.
