If you are looking to keep the children entertained this summer head down to Chester’s Roman Amphitheatre.
The Amphitheatre will be hosting Family Days every Saturday from the 13th of July to the 31st of August. There will be free workshops, games and all sorts of children’s activities every Saturday from 12-4 during the summer months.
The Roman Amphitheatre in Chester is the largest of its kind in Britain and was once used for military training of the 20th Legion and for entertainment purposes.
Evacuations in 2004 and 2005 revealed two stone amphitheatres!
It is a wonderful location that vividly highlights the historical importance of Chester, which is rich in ancient Roman historical relics big and small.
This year it will be hosting an assortment of activities for the children each Saturday. The themes for these activities include ‘Summer Holidays’ where you can experience the impression of Chester by the sea with fairground rides and games on offer. This theme will take place on July the 20th. July the 27th’s theme will be ‘Medieval Mayhem’ where England’s dark ages will be recreated to celebrate the Grovenor Museum’s ‘Discover a medieval city’ programme. The 3rd of August brings ‘Fantasy, Folklore and Fairytales’ to the Amphitheatre. There will be storytelling, workshops and dressing up on this Saturday as traditional fairytales are recreated.
The 10th of August brings the very fun and educational ‘Weird Science’ day where the amphitheatre is converted into a giant laboratory. The following Saturday will be ‘Jackanory’ theme. A host of literary activities will take place including a magnetic poetry board. The 24th brings the very appropriate ‘what did the Romans do for us’ theme. It will be the perfect selection of activities for the location in the Roman Amphitheatre. There will be plenty of Roman themed games and tasks for both kids and parents to enjoy. Finally the last Saturday on the 31st will be the Mad Hatter’s Tea party theme with the famous scene from the novel recreated in Chester.
