One of the very best events to look forward to in Chester when the summer returns is the Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre.
Grosvenor Park’s Open Air Theatre is one of the very best open air theatres in the country and one of the very few outside of London. It is certainly the only open air theatre outside of London to gain such a fine national reputation.
The theatre is open from the 27th of June until the 24th of August in 2014 and let us hope for fine weather because on warm summer evenings this theatre is one of the best entertainment and culture experiences in Chester.
The theatre supports a large audience and wonderful popular productions, in fact last year’s performance of Othello was a near sell out with people flocking to enjoy the beauty of the open air theatre in the park and revel in the excellent work of the actors.
The 2014 season will present an incredible array of wonderful performances for us all to enjoy this summer with a brand new adaption of the children’s classic ‘The Secret Garden’. This has been written by the highly acclaimed national star Jessica Swale. Many will know her from her work on the Globe’s theatre’s highly successful Blue Stockings play. There will also be two Shakespearean performances following the success of last year’s Othello. Two of his best works will be interpreted. One of the top comedies: The Comedy of Errors and one of the most well-known tragedies: Macbeth.
The Open Air Theatre in Grosvenor Park actively encourages you to bring your own food. Picnics are very popular with many regular annual visitors bringing impressive hampers of food including champagne and you can even order your picnic the theatre’s partners at Lombard Coffee House. There is also usually a marquee bar.
If you are thinking these theatre events sound wonderful but are concerned about the rain then come prepared. Part of the appeal of the open air theatre is being outside but even in summer the UK can throw us some difficult weather. You can buy waterproof and covered seats and we suggest wearing waterproof gear but refrain from using an umbrella so that you do not obstruct anyone’s view. If the weather is very poor the performance will be stopped and restarted with maximum intervals being an hour.
