Denbigh town is a picturesque settlement in the hills of the Vale of Clwyd and it is full of history and Welsh culture.
Denbigh hosts an assortment of wonderful events every year such as the highly renowned and massive Flint and Denbigh show. This is one of the biggest country fayres in North Wales. Denbigh also hosts smaller, charming events to entertain locals and visitors alike such as the Denbigh Plum festival, the Denbigh Beer festival, the Denbigh Christmas festival and many more wonderful events for your entertainment. This year Denbigh was also proud host to the National Eisteddfod.
2014 will deliver a whole host of new events for us to enjoy. People come from all around to visit the historical sights of Denbigh and Denbigh Town Council is delighted to announce the return of the Historical Lectures.
The historical lectures, exploring famous and ancient sites in Denbigh, proved so popular they are back for another round. From the 30th of January to the 20th of March you can enjoy the historical lectures of Denbigh and learn more about local, Welsh culture in the process. These lectures are completely free and will start at 7:30pm.
The historical lectures focus on topics of local interest and are presented by local, expert, guest speakers. There are far more exciting sites in Denbigh than you may have realised. Denbigh means small fortress and reference to the town first appeared in records after the Norman Conquest, though it is far likelier and evidence suggests that the fortress may have been there much longer. It is theorised it was once a Roman fortress and present as the headquarters for Dafydd Gruffydd, the brother of the last Welsh Prince in the twelfth century.
Denbigh Castle is the most apparent historical site and a beautiful ruin on history but other important sites include Gwaenynog Hall. This was visited by Dr Johnson to whom a monument was erected in its grounds. Beatrix Potter also visited these grounds and evidence of her garden remains. Henllan Road is home to the ruins of the Old Foxhall erected by John Panton, the Elizabethan recorder of Denbigh. Brenig Complex lies near Denbigh, a manmade lake for water activities.
