Most people think that North Wales is only a good holiday destination in the summer. Nothing could be further from the truth – but we can see how people come to that assumption. There’s a little bit of bad publicity about for the North Wales region regarding the weather – when you mention North Wales you’re bound to imagine freezing away in a caravan at the top of some desolate hill with nothing but the gazes of some very curious sheep to keep you company.
However, it’s really not like that all. Throughout the years, a lot of time, effort and resources have been allocated by the Welsh and the British Government to increasing Welsh tourism, and the result is that the region has become a hub for tourism on a year around basis. Come rain or shine, there’s so many amazing things to do in the North Wales region – and the town of Llanrwst is a fantastic base to explore them all. There’s a number of excellent hotels in Llanrwst and the surrounding area which are primed to offer relaxing stays in the height of comfort.
As for things to do in the North Wales region in the winter, there’s so very many things. Gwydir Castle is an excellent one, for starters. This beautiful and very ancient Welsh house is one of the very finest Tudor era houses in Wales, and the former home of the Wynn family. Guided tours are available for groups of 12 people or more, though please keep in mind that due to the fact that Gwydir Castle is indeed still a home, bookings must be made in advance.
Bodnant Gardens is also a wonderful destination, and can be enjoyed in all weathers. This National Trust estate is a world famous location, and a grade 1 listed horticultural paradise for garden enthusiasts. Even better, from November, they allow dogs to come too!
For those looking for a less refined, and more white knuckle experience, North Wales also has the amazing Bounce Below. This attraction is open in all seasons, and is a very unique (and very novel) way to take advantage of the unique landscapes within the region. Bounce Below is a series of trampolines and guided exploration routes through abandoned mines deep underground, and offers a fantastic experience for families and groups.
