All LED technologies have the power to change our use of energy when lighting our world. Using LEDs could make a significant contribution to greener living by reducing energy use. The plan is being trialled in Ipswich in Queensland and it could save the city roughly 200,000 dollars a year, which is 117,783 pounds, if they switched to advanced LED street lights! Using far less electricity is positive for the environment. Our use of fossil fuels and energy in general is out of control and if we want to preserve our natural environment we must utilise new technology quickly. Not only do LEDs save money by using less electricity but if we turned all our street lamps to LEDs we could seriously reduce light pollution in the UK and the world. LEDs have much more focused light; they leak far less light in unintended directions than fluorescents and incandescent lights. Only 10% of their energy is leaked horizontally or vertically, however research being carried out in Mexico and Japan could create a whole new generation of LED technology that would only leak 2% of its energy in unintended directions.

If this technology is successful and all street lamps used these new LEDs our view of the night sky could change dramatically. Light pollution would be reduced a great deal if the UK adopted this technology. The Campaign to Protect Rural England is well aware of this and welcomes this new technology with open arms. A study they presented revealed that light pollution increased by 26% between the years 1993 and 2000! If councils are willing to invest in the new technology it could completely change the way we light and see our night time world.
