gardening

The verdict seems to be unanimous – gardening is great for the body and for the soul. All-in-all, there has been excellent evidence to suggest that being around plants is good for both your health and for your overall wellbeing. We examine ways of which the simple act of gardening has been proven to help your health.

Being around plants helps boost your mental health. There’s no doubt about it really, gardening is a lot of fun, and being in a garden, getting your hands dirty, and creating something from nothing, facilitating the existence of a living, breathing organism with your own two hands, is very therapeutic.

There’s no easier way to gain a sense of purpose and reward for such little investment, and all-in-all gardening is an excellent way to get a little mental boost when it is most needed. Saying that, we would recommend not trading mental pain for shoulder/back pain.

Should you decide to start gardening in earnest, you might want to invest in a set of greenhouse staging, like the type which is manufactured to order. All of the mental well-being and sense of ease in the world won’t be half as sweet while your shoulders and your back are hurting you as a result of a poorly set-up greenhouse layout.

Did you know that spending time around plants helps reduce a condition known as “sick building syndrome”? As you start to get ill (as everyone does!), your body can display some effects of your immune system’s battle against the bug.

These symptoms are well known to anyone that’s ever in the early stages of a cold, dry skin, itchy eyes, and headaches. Having plants around helps with this – they increase relative humidity inside an area such as a greenhouse, which helps your body combat these symptoms.

Plants kind of, sort of, prevent you from breathing in dust. Plants, as they take in carbon dioxide, also take in airborne particles which would normally be breathed in.

This is to do with surface area on the leaves. As they take in what they need to live, a lot of icky, unseen particles also go with it. Over time, these can build up. If you’ve ever noticed how waxy a plant’s leaves can be, you’ve more than likely seen a buildup of all of this nasty stuff. (Which would normally be in your lungs.)

We hope that this small article has helped you start our gardening in the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019 – whether you have a small plot or a large greenhouse, there is a lot of joy to be had in the process of making something grow – and we cannot recommend it enough.
