A new bypass is slated for construction near Caernarfon, this will involve 7 different bridges inter-joining and thus connecting Bontnewydd and Caernarfon in Gwynedd. The Welsh Assembly Government has published draft orders for the six-mile bypass along the A487, with an opportunity for organisations and individuals to submit their objections.

Construction is said to begin as early as autumn 2017, approximately a year’s time. There have been delays on the construction of the bypass because of talks of wildlife concerns. There are concerns that the area is a migration route for animals such as otters and bats. There have been additional environmental mitigation measures during the summer. This bypass was first discussed in the 90s. Plaid Cymru AM for Arfon said that he was ‘Delighted that draft orders have been published, and how it looks like things are moving ahead. There was a slight display that was disappointing’.

The cost of this new bypass is an estimated £90.9m before VAT is added. However, this turns to a positive. The cost of the scheme will be spent 75% with local welsh suppliers, which is fantastic news for local contractors.

There is currently a congestion problem between Bontnewydd and Caernarfon, the proposal was made with the intention to relieve this.

A public inquiry may be held in early 2017, and if the draft is successful it would begin in the autumn of that year. With the current timetable, the project would be complete, the road opened by late 2019.

It is definitely true that this new road would make Caernarfon much more accessible, which is brilliant news anyone wishing to access Snowdonia hotels.

So what do you think? Is this a much needed road, or should we be preserving the environment as much as possible? Have your say in the comments.
